The effervescent night of Dublin in the tinge of Ireland ranges within its ability to create a sense of fun, adventure and a bit of shenanigans. The arena known as Temple Bar, easily traversed over the nearby Liffey River, offers a journey of late-night tendencies to behold the utterly seasoned or the inherent novice. The key becomes to wander beyond and find those hideaways that lie just beyond the grasp of knowing.

Before the intention begins in such travails, certain standards must satiated, namely those of the stomach variety. Culinary aspects of this sector have their mainstays in play too but with a nightlife persona, the personification of this specific mindset becomes one of “cool” or “on-the-go”.

To begin, the Brewery Bar hidden within the Guinness Storehouse just beyond Christ Church, offers the official intonation of the infamous Stout within its dishes buoyed by the fact that the brewery itself is running full force just across the street behind the St. James Gate.

While the Guinness Stew is one of flavor, the Guinness Burger optimizing aged Irish cheddar and local bacon, offers a tendency of heartiness and comfort especially when served with a bottled Foreign Extra Stout which is only available in parts of the Caribbean and Africa beyond the walls of this establishment.

However, the most vivid item within the restaurant, consumed in the taste of Guinness is the mustard-infused mashed potatoes which are a godsend replete in its ideals of sheer fun.

Down the street about three blocks from Guinness, directly across from Christ Church, Leo Burdocks, world famous fish n’ chips hole-in-the-wall, sits unassuming right around the corner from the Lord Edwards Tavern (whose potato salad is superb). While its portions are abnormally vivid, the requisite taste despite the influx of malt and chips waxed pale with an overabundance of breading.

Just across the river though, near the utterly cool and supremely located Morrison Hotel, which knows its ability with design decor rooms bleeding reds and art with a sense of knowing, Fusciardi’s Cafe gave the fish n’ chips gurus at Burdocks a run for the money with a serving that, while not overtly filling, punctuated with the right blend of fish, crispiness and full flavor along with a scintilating mouthful of fries that hit the spot.

Another possibility before the intention of the Temple Bar area resides in the evening of the Old Jameson Distillery. While no production still happens inside these walls, this is where the entire empire began. What it does offer beyond the standard tour which anyone can take during the day is a multi course meal inside is corridors knows as “The Shindig”.

While the intention would have thought to have been a meal punctuated at each vision by a different vintage (considering the wondrousness of some of Jameson’s more reserve brands), the delivery was still adequate, though respective at times more of a dinner theater chophouse than a world class distillery.

The progression of a brisk but thin potato leek soup led into a prevalent darne of salmon, intensive in its breathe to be almost overwhelming, ensconced in a lemon chive sauce over a bed of mashed potatoes and vegetables. Its vilification though tended to wax as typical Irish fare with an intention for the hearty.

The warm apple and berry crumble along with a rich Jameson Irish Coffee resounded beautifully as a three piece Irish band accompanied by a talented troupe of dancers quipped with a sense of vision that had the room jumping with energy buoyed by an international mix of young and old.

Leading into the night, up Georges past the screaming roar of pubs from the Liffey to Edwards, the key, like any of the cool areas in NYC or London, is to find the spot of life that exists beyond the forced energy of the norm.

Happening upon The Hairy Lemon, true up along Dame Court, the idea became golden for this was a true local bar, not trying to be “that Dublin” but rather packed with incessantly beautiful girls and cool gents while not being overly pretentious of itself. The space itself was packed to the gills but still gave room to move. The drinks did not overcome with price but let you know they were there. Above all, the general courteous vibe of the locals inside this bar was all encompassing as a gift of a Baby Guinness combining Kahlua & Baileys simply hit the spot for its novelty.

From this perception, local talk perceived to “The Bar With No Name” which was apparently located in a nearby converted loft with no sign and the requirement to know the entrance that led to the second floor. After consulting with the effervescent Google, the address was revealed but the sneaky irony is that the true number of the venue is actually three numbers off.

Arriving a little after 1am, the place, known as Bar 3, is hopping with a distinct feeling unlike other places around Dublin. It has an almost carnival atmosphere with its outside tent structure which is an utter surprise. Inside the feeling is just as vivid though with a sense of dark sultry intensity that is neither forced nor obvious as girls sing with abandon to a mix of metal, old school rock and soul as the lead bartender, older and covered in tattoos, pours the Guinness with sound creation, like a God in his work.

Dublin is a place of knowledge, especially where the backwater textures of high vision drink and culinary balance is concern, especially in a world where Guinness is the norm. The Temple Bar area, bathed in the melting sun reflecting off the Liffey, knows its identity but continues to grow as a global community discovers its possibilities.

The greens glide over the meadows with a tender brush while the sereneness of its quandry makes one relax. Such is the essence of Lake Charlesand its golf courses. Showing a surprising intensity of challenge that breaks down through three distinct play styles experienced in a variety of weather, the reality becomes one of style and smoothness.

The essential element of creating both a challenging and a visually pleasing course is always a distinctified divergence since different players like different challenges. Some relegate with water obstacles or long fairways. The key is making a balance of riches seem effortless.

At the inset, Gray Plantation Golf Course, which functions as a public course, intensifies immediately because of its difficulty. While wind, in distinct presence, creates other obstacles, the angle of the fairways themselves is what helps define the play here in addition to specifically placed water handicaps which leads to the incessant loss of accessories. Hole 2 begins with the inherent presence of an industrial backdrop against the bayou marked by an undulating green that prevents curve. Hole 6 is exceptional as a Par 3 banked on a rolling front that required a full water jump of nearly 200 yards. Hole 7 requires a long fairway shot but tricks with two water jumps that require short tandem shots to prevent landing in the brush. Hole 8 blinds in the best way as a Par 3 which basks in its irony with looming houses in the background, one of which has a stop sign right behind the drop point. Hole 11 allows for a bogie on the angle of a safe play instead of a long drive while Hole 16 incessant swallows shots with almost a complete lake along the side that requires replete strategy. Hole 18 brought the straight hit back home in the form of the club house which billowing through a stark vision of an oak tree gave an auspice of romantic vampire literature as the overhanging clouds gave a dim glow in the setting sun.

Where Gray Plantation’s Pars were more didactic and inherently strategic for the intermediate golfer ready for a bit of thinking, the National Golf Club, which is still fairly new, located in Westlake, offers more of a business approach to the ideal. While the clubhouse is hardly up to poise, the playability of the course allows for more conversational pursuits because many of its hole are so straightlace. The course itself has a streamlined beauty but is almost too angular in that the hits are predetermined in most cases. The driving range offers content warm up yet is removed from the street life. The front nine here offers a dexterity while still not overwhelming the player. Hole 5 is most unique with a Par 3 jump using almost church pew sand bunkers that either require clearance or chipping by experience to heaven while Hole 8 offers a split progression hit which can be deceiving in terms of the location of the hole. Hole 14 on the back nine offers a double back drive with water on either side of each hit culminating with a green titled at a heavy angle.

The Contraband Bayou Course, on the grounds of the L’aurberge Du Lac Resort, combines the necessities of both angles of business and playability into one specific vision. Having talked to the resident golf professional, who initially hailed from the Palm Beach Florida area, the adherence to a very specific guideline shows the building possibility of the area. The course, because of its flowing greens and perceptive visions of the resort area and grounds, make it extremely TV friendly offering the ability for it to become a tournament course which is only enhanced by the pro’s involvement with the PGA.

After ingratiating on the driving range, the first holes, despite a short onslaught of rain, offered a riveting play which in all weather offers both thinking and relaxation. With its position on the edge of the bayou, most of the water ponds, have been adopted each by a single alligator because of its close proximity to the wildlife refuge. While one was not seen, these reptiles are wonder to see and don’t mess with players unless they themselves are messed with. It simply adds another exotic element to the play. While the thought becomes right now to flip the nines because of a road barrier, either interfere with the exception that both the current 17th and 18th hole, offer great closure to the course.

Beginning on the current front, Hole 4 works well because of its water jump but slices undeniably to the right while Hole 9 offers a straight shot with a bending water obstacle looming on the left side heading towards the green. By comparison, Hole 17 on the back offers a satisfying alleeop shot off the tea direct on the green like a drive out of heaven allowing for a bogie curve despite a challenging green. Hole 18 is almost as good with a powerful drive to the front of the green using poised hits to land at double bogie.

One aspect that immensely enhances the possibilities of Contraband is its essential symbiosis with the L’Auberge Resort. Located on a wide swath of land right on Lake Charles, the abilities of the resort defy expectations in an exceptional way. Whereas many times, when one thinks of a riverboat resort, which is required for gambling in this area of Louisiana, there might be a stigma in terms of the level of service. The L’auberge in their prominence proves in their case that this is extremely false. The great aspect is that the casino’s presence does not overcome the rest of the experience as it does in most instances. The check in, shops and restaurants surround the casino but because of its closed construction in terms of the riverboat aspect, it creates a boundary which gives it a relaxed atmosphere without overcoming its guests.

From the guest room on the 14th Floor, which beyond offering a recessed reading area, a large and intriniscally decorated bathroom and uber comfortable beds, the landscape permeated below leads out from the fairways of the golf course to the flowing ebb of the lake to the distant industrial plants. From above, one can see the outline of the riverboat structure, perfectly symmetrical along the water floating effervescently along with the commerce surrounding it.

Before moving to the essence of food within the resort, the specific importance and effectiveness of the Spa Du Lac, located steps away from the guest elevators, is both easy to find and user friendly. Entering in, the Spa itself is not overly endowed with space but uses its possibility to wonderful conclusion. The Spa itself will be expanded next year in a new construction project billowing the resort by an additional 400 rooms. However in its current format, it is more than pliable. Functioning more as a health spa with an added elegance, the staff is very indicative. Arriving for a deep tissue massage, after 36 holes of golf where driving against the wind required more power than usual, the lower back and hamstrings on the back of the left leg screamed with tightness. The masseuse, understanding the problem areas, took a more sports medicine approach which allowed for relaxation of the muscle using both heat and segmented pressure. Afterwards the compacted space and easy accessibility of the jacuzzi in relation to the sauna offered a very precise progression. Sitting afterwards in the lounge area, watching the plasma, the lack of need to move showcased the effectiveness of said treatment in addition to the extended hours of the spa itself which is open until 9pm in an age where many similar places close nearly two hours before.

The diversity of food within the resort within easy walking distance of each other is undeniable. From the early morning viscosity of hot chocolate and a heavenly creme cheese pastry at Lattes to a late night expresso and creme brulee sorbet at Desserts, there is an angle for every kind of taste.

For high end fine dining, the Snake River Grill heightens by its selection of beef and wonderful appetizers. Starting off with the Peking Duck scallion enriched crepes, the paradox of the two possibilities melds in a very sound and hearty aftertaste. Reflecting in its barometric allowances, the richness of the bite size steak taco ensconced in avocado sauce binded with finger licking essences of small but succulent lamb chop lollipops prepares the progress for the Big Daddy. Rocking out at 22oz with very little fat, the Snake River Porterhouse, cooked medium well, fired with flavor on all cylinders vindicated in droves by the addition of a cognac and peppercorn sauce highlighted by a smatteriing of Louisiana crab meat and a loaded baked potato which settled the synpases into a virtual food coma. For those brave enough to venture on, the home made Eskimo Bars wrapping ice cream and a deep rich brownie into heavy chocolate for dipping in a caramel sauce need apply.

For the lighter in structure, two other establishments within the resort, again located in the circle realm around the riverboat frame, offer different libations for dinnertime.

At Asia, which is open late until 4am, the briskness of an early evening bowl of wonton soup looms large with a hearty bowl filled with a plethora of succulent dumplings in addition to pork and scallions, all of which can be made to order. Add a order of shrimp filled spring rolls with a light tangy peanut butter sauce and the time is right to saunter back to the tables for some early evening temptation.

For those with a latter appetite resting within the 10pm hour, the branded Jack Daniels Bar & Grill offers chill, roadhouse style hanging. Beginning with a couple draft Shock Tops (thanks to Michelob) which has the effervescent and encompassing taste of a citrus brewed Hiefeweisen, and blended in tandem with a JD Roadhouse burger lathered in swiss cheese and bacon along with a side of steak fries, contentment becomes a state of being. While finishing up the pint as a mosaic of beads creating the American Flag hangs above the bar, a rockabilly band, half Everclear/half Nirvana bust out everything from Pearl Jam to Sublime to Lynryd Skynyrd.

In keeping with the all night purveyance, Le Cafe is great for the early morning breakfasts, especially if one is in a hurry to hit a tee time. With an exceptionally efficient staff, even a hearty meal like country fried steak topped with gravy and sided with cheese scrambled eggs and butter topped grits comes out in a heartbeat, replete with flavor and a glass of milk.

Now dining is, of course, not only available within the resort, but as a “one stop shop”, L’auberge has the ground pretty well covered but the same progression can be experienced in the outside world with nary a little driving involved.

In terms of fine dining, Mazen’s offers a elegant, refined hoist of Southern hospitality while lingering with flavor and creativity in the aquatic culinary space. Beginning with a looking glass of Oysters, both Rockefeller and Bienville, glistening with shrimp, cheese and spinach, baked on the half shell with a spicy afterbite, the inset of “Kibbies”, a pasty type concoction filled with ground beef, pine nuts and onions, despite its wantonness, is quite delicious like a Southern calzone of sorts. The main course of Fish Aladdin, toasted for perfection, brings out numerous flavors in its lemon and butter sauces through the sheer preciseness of its preparation while still engulfed in rich crabmeat. After dinner, despite an absence of expresso, a Grand Mariner chocolate souffle hit the spot with dexterity, verve and a bit of sweetness.

A variety of other tastes populate the town in droves. Directly across from the Lake Charles Visitors Bureau across Interstate 10, the legendarySteamboat Bill’s waits to heaps its treasure of crawdads upon the willing. Armed with only napkins, sweet tea and wanton fingers, a tray replete with five pounds of critters along with potatoes and corn offer the dexterious a welcome challenges. Highlighted by their steaming broth that place the fires of Hell into the crustaceans with a mix of Creole seasoning and cayenne pepper, the aftermath is not for the faint of heart.

Chastain’s Seafood Shack jump starts the cables with the appropriate “Louisiana poppers” mixing shrimp and cream cheese before satisfying with a simmering bowl of savory chicken and sausage gumbo and a hilarious staff that leaves you with a family feeling and more than a joke or two. Darrell’s, for lunch as well, excels in the simple but nevertheless brilliant sandwich known as the “Surf N’ Turf” which seamlessly blends Louisiana roast beef and shrimp on a crispy hero roll with a rich tangy mayonaisse sauce peppered in jalapenos. The place was packed with good reason as revelers come from as far as 4 hours away to get their sandwiches.

On the lighter side of the dining outlay, Luna’s in downtown has a great bohemian feeling while being just cool enough to be unaware of it through its undeniably laid back staff and interesting culinary paradoxes. While the Abita Special Brew Pecan Harvest combined with a before dinner appetizer of spinach and artichoke dips with especially tasty and luscious crisps offered the semblance of recognizable bar food, the main course of Luna Tuna steak was a puzzling and ultimately gratifying outlay. Consisting of an encrusted slab of tuna, seared in one large swath, the taste remains consistent despite the distinct numbers of sauces and spices running through its electric center.

Not to be forgotten, breakfast is a meeting place of importance in this town with regular meetings among a variety of groups which keeps the conversations vivacious even in the morning hours. Southern Spice, like Le Cafe but with a little more grease, does it right with a rib eye seasoned to perfection surrounded by salty hash browns, cheese filled eggs and the requisite and always reliable butter honed grits.

Lake Charles is a bountiful area of work and play. If simply approaching for a golf getaway, within a small radius, the city offers undeniable access and value. In addition to the three courses played, there are an exceptional number of public courses with different range levels that have possibility. Mallard Cove, situated on the edge of the old Naval Base, has a great old school feel to it while arranging over a vast amount of land. Pine Shadows, aided by the steady hand of PGA Professional Todd Boudreaux, is great for beginners getting their first shot at golf or those intermediate enough who want a level of steady play. Last but not least, Frasch Park continually changes their perceptions of play with numerous grand obstacles to challenge the player masterminded with skill by Golf Pro George McInnis. Surrounding this course is a massive sports complex replete with aquatic center, softball fields and numerous other activities that make the intent of the area very family and sports friendly, highlighted by the fact that junior golf and training are very important to this area which gives the implement to the young in a sport that in cyclical fashion is now becoming cooler by the day.

With its food and sport is direct corrolation buoyed by an exceptional central resort complex in the form of L’Aurberge, Lake Charles is one of those secret golf hideaways that your friends want to hear about but didn’t know where to look.

The natural vision of Switzerland is hidden within the auspices of its perceptions. Between three distinctive regions, the options of possibilities exist. From the beauty of its Italian influenced Ticino region to the dizzing heights of the Western Alps to the subtle and smooth feeling of Zurich, this arena offers a different array of sights, tastes and community.

With direct service from LAX and NY, the different stages of Swiss Airlines offers distinctiveness of comfort. After the relaxation of the Star Alliance Lounge in LAX’s Tom Bradley Terminal, the flight is caught with utmost ease, retrieved just before takeoff. The key is timing as the fires of Los Angeles burn away to reveal the gentle twilight allowed by an overnight flight, 10 hours in length. With ample legroom, power outlets for necessary work, comfortable temperature and a three-course meal elegant of wine, the eyes closed only to reveal the day later.

With the ease of a Swiss Pass allowing full transport through the country’s rail system, the four-hour journey to Mariesco in the Ticino region unveiled winding views through massive valleys brimmed with the sight of the 15,000 foot Mt. Rosa which takes the breath away.

The Ticino region lies in the South of Switzerland. Staying at the Hotel Serpiano (which is only 500 meters from the Italian border), the grandiosity is apparent overlooking Lake Lugano towards Mancote. Only a matter of miles away, Lake Como, which has become the getaway home of George Clooney, shows the connection of the beauty of the region for people of taste.

Touring the small town of Meride, reminiscent of Tuscany, replete with the two churches of San Silvestro & San Rocco, a single candle is lit as the vision of Santa Lucia peers forth in essential silence as a woman speaks greetings from a window above.

A short ride away, Agriloro, the winery of Meinrad Perler, sits in the breast of Monte Gereroso winding succinctly through a small wisp of heaven between Switzerland and Italy. Formerly a banker but now with several wine notices of brilliance under his belt, Perler winds his grapes between experiments of chemistry and quality interest. His gold prize winning 2007 Merlot Reserve is the pinnacle of taste with zest and a bite of blackberry while his Casmiro, despite a fraction of scitzophrenia, pulls off a motley blend with a range of sensibility.

Lunch within the cool shadow of Meride at the Grotto Fosatti waifs with the compelling aroma of morels that wanders from the kitchen as the owner flirts with a visiting girl who inquires of his polenta. His wide smiling response: “But my risotto!”

The serving of polenta, based of cornmeal with a bit of a twist, offers a hearty comparison to the pork surrounded by carrots and potatoes. When balanced in zest with a soft but nice Punto 902 Merlot and preceded by a light salad touched by Balsamico, it is bella. However it is the Verissimo, made in a mixture of Frangelico and whiskey, that hits with a heightened sweetness hidden in the wonder of an expresso.

In short order following, Bellinazona, resting in a nearby valley, was a strategic battle position of lore heightened by the rule of the Dukes Of Milan (“Tempest” anyone?) in the early 1400s. Castles reign in the tender geography but the cool winds prevail giving a sense of calm that besets the night.

At Hotel Cereda, a quiet terrace offers a soothing afternoon moment of life as a light breeze shimmers, the light drifting through the lifting trees as La Rossa, a local Ticino beer, fades the sounds away.

The vision of Castelgrande, occupying the first line of defense against the Milanese Dukes of the past, shows the cusp of how the generals might have perceived the battles. With similar tinges in the Moravian embattlement of parts of the Czech Republic again the Turks, the key here is the maintaining of longetivity and the implementation of strategic strikes. Advancing marauders along these long fortified walls would be suceptible to unprotected attacks further proving the advantageous wranglings of this structure.

From the Castlegrande, the long leading grass terrain into the heart of town creates elation in its simplicity and daring. From its pinnacle view, three preparing castles ascend up the respondent hill.

At Castle Montebello, the working drawbridge highlights the beauty of the overlooking grass as the resident beast, a friendly cat, marches in time under orders to the delight of all involved before bounding down the hill to welcome an unprepared guest.

Dinner within Castle Castello, further up the mountain, offered the last of Ticino before the transition to the heights of the Alps.

The restaurant Osteria Sasso Corbaro sits quietly within the coolness of the tower atrium of Castello. The paradoxical influence of its seafood with lobster claw fettucini dwelling within a light primavera sauce offered slight resistance in its overcooked mentality while the luscious haddock, flaky while not overcoming the wonder of Norwegian sole in Scandinavia, offered a content antecedent. The smoothness of Cornico Oro Merlot, infinitely drinkable in its peppers, encouraged the late evening within the global possibilities of those present from Johannesburg to Mumbai to Milano, one with all in laughter. As the sweetness of Collecta Costana, with its continuing influence of Vessimo & Expresso, ended the evening, talk of love for “The Big Lebowski” predicated tales of fun.

Driving into the increasing elevation of the St. Gotthard Pass, the tree line fades away as the pinnacle leading to one glacier view makes the skyline like heaven. The immenseness of the rock against the human form makes one perceive life differently. Unlike the Rockies, these views stretch on to forever and suggest something primordial.

As the road retreats in the distance, the vision of a lone girl against the backdrop indicates the sheer magnificance of the wonder.

Approaching Sion, the scream of fighter jets zooming low over the wine headquarters of Espace Provins pre-supposes its variety. In tour mode, the simpleness of the 2008 Merlot overcomes the smooth citrus elements of 2007 Bougnesa White while the cool recollection of 2008 Ice ladles the consuming cheese wonder of small cakes. But exercise calls.

Pfyn/Finges borders along the angle of the Valais Valley with gentle grasslands leading up to winding trails. Unbecoming of harsh angles for the novice, stories of myths in the forest laying on a bed of ferns becomes the whistling brushing of the trees. A knowing guide understands the need to enjoy even as the sturdy bridge becomes with dancing.

The natural essence of the area allows for combination of the mineral elements in interesting ways as pure mineral water from the Valais is combined in chemistry with a local absinthe, replete in its bottle, creating a milky elixir consumed by all in numbers.

As the rain begins to fall, a bottle of Ticino Casmiro (from Agriloro) is shared as the many nationalities with a sense of comraderie find commonality in their stories of life, tenderness, fun and, best of all: chocolate.

In the quiet town of Fiesch in the region of Goms, an early morning walk brings the eye to the base of a beheamouth. Bordering a tram, the vision continues as the cable car transport makes its way almost directly up 9000 feet at the top of theEggishorn. As a small wire bridge danges over a 600 foot drop, the swinging becomes contingent.

As the wind blows, the view over the Aletsch Glacier is intense. This unadulterated view of the Western Alps is inconceivable at times in its mass. Looking down 1000 feet below to the floor of the glacier leading down from a peak nearly 14000 feet, the ice is cracked with rivules that can extend almost 200 feet below the surface. The extreme depth of the glacial ice reaching down nearly 2000 feet is one of the deepest in the world.

As a guide leads a group up to the angle of the panorama, one thinks of the journey to Mordor with Frodo in “Lord Of The Rings” as the small figures wind around straggly rocks and straight drops-offs into gulfs of nothingness. The true insignifance of man becomes quite clear.

As the clouds roll through, a fighter jet on maneuvers screams through the glacier floor with afterburners flaring into a vertical cut of the cloudy darkness as pelts of ice rain down. The balance of technology and nature bending in the wind impedes a sense of foreboding while, in the distance, the godliness of the Matterhorn watches aloft in her majesty.

Lunch at the cusp of this vision begates a need for stamina and heartiness. At the Horli Hitta Alpine Hut, “rosti”, combining a bed of hash browns, crispy and flavorful, is blanketed in creamy yorta cheese with thick but curt slices of bacon and topped with fried eggs; a just meal for the hearty traveler.

Only one thing elevated above the soaring awe with the clamor of wistful horns trumpeting the sound of tradition: chocolate. The quest began.

Later, as the gurgling brook entices the small village of Binn with the light richness of Swiss cheese, the city center crackles with life.

In quiet succession, the chocolate grail of Nutella appears through the small oasis of Migros lighting up the hearts of women gathered from across the world. As the calfs moo and the tinkling of their neck bells resound, the calmness of life in the Binntal consumes the valley.

Early morning brings a sense of simple contentment. At the Hotel Fieschhof, the pure natural air consumes the cusp of dawn as church bells sound in the distance with a crisp echo that imagines a silence with the edge of heaven, away from the indulgence of the city.

Leaving the lift of the country on the Swiss Express to Zurich, the fast rails offer richness as the smiles of those around us is aroused approaching the excitement of Switzerland’s central city.

The beauty of Lake Zurich leading into the city river flow is as clear as the water that feeds it. Aboard the ferry Uteliberg as ancient twin pillars from the 12th Century overlook the departure, the clouds break over the soothing stillness.

As the white rush of rain covers the city of Zurich, the top of the Uteliberg billows with the roar of the wind, basking in the love of nature.

Returning to the streets, the newfound clarity evenly succumbs the 1200 spring fed drinking fountains across the city allowing for a pure gulp of water as the sweet music from inside the Fraumunster Cathedral parallels the quiet passing of nuns.

As the side streets allow escape within the city center, the solidity of the Swiss Banks juts above with the institutions of UBS and Credit Suisse. Nearby the clocks in evervescent perpuity tick time with a preciseness known all over the world.

Listening to the bells chimes in the warmth of the Cafe Weggem, an expresso and a tart svatchka plum crumb cake comforts, a small getaway for those in the know as a drizzling brightness seeps in through the windows.

Zurich also offers a veil of surrounding proponents diverse in their thought processes.

At the Masaola Rainforest Preserve, part of the Zurich Zoo, a complete recreation of a Madagascar habitat down to the temperature and thousands of different plantlife species, animals roam wild acting in their preternatural state. A fruit bat flies overhead, its wingspan heavy with each passing glide. Gray haired lemurs screech in the back trees, arguing with each other over some fallen food. A giant male tortoise roars his dominance with full open viciousness as he climbs atop his female mate. And red leaf lemurs watch the human integers with veiled eyes before flying dozens of feet in the air to adjoining trees, locking their roots in the ever increasing soil.

By visionary proactivity, the Swiss National Museum traces both the history and the thoughts of Switzerland. Like the US, this nation is built upon the motley proponents of immigrants (in this case from Germany to Italy to France) which constitute its specified thought process which is relegated over almost 800 years.

Inside its walls, an early stained glass window, highlighting Mary entitled “Madonna of Flums”, dating from 1200 and commissioned by the Chapel of St. Jacob , bustles in the light with its hues of red blue and brown.

Nearby the monastery tapestry of “The Walled Garden”, dated 1580, gives a whole new modern take of intent with refracted mirror light from video projectors that allow the actual stories depicting the birth, death and resurrection of Christ to take on an animated quality within the actual structures without physically hurting the artifact.

In another tiny corner, the oldest existing panorama, depicting Zurich, to survive the Restoration, dated 1421, shows a vision of life not completely different than the vista portrait of today. The twin steeples above the city mirror the Fraumunster Cathedral leading across the bridge and out into Lake Zurich as the clouds rise above the blue, comforting in their consistency as citizens mill about their daily routines.

As the “aplermagronen”, a traditional Swiss meal combining macaroni and chicken croquette then topped with apple sauce, consumes with the smooth of a Feldschlossen, the Swiss experience in the heart of Zurich reaches full circle.

From the sweeping green valleys of Ticino to the dizzying heights of the Eggishorn in the Binntal to the calm soothing waters of Lake Zurich, the natural tendencies of Switzerland speak in clear terms to the likes of a discerning international audience searching for the best in clear and green prerogatives while still enjoying the more grapelike and hearty inclinations of a traveling world.

The prevalence of late night in Playa Del Carmen deep within Riviera Maya simply provided an element of mirror reflection in the daylight escapades of spa pampering and culinary leisure as the light warms self reflexive from the heat of the night.

Leading in its vision of relaxation and comfortability, the Playacar Palace, beyond the inception of its in-room jacuzzi heaven, opened in the day onto a blue and green wonderland.

The pool bar, fun and willing, serving the Miami Vices cold and quick, spills back and forth towards the beach.

Close by, the ferry travels quickly back and forth to Cozumel within yards. Swimming in the fun clarity of the sea, any thoughts of trouble flow away as the bikini visions glaze in the sun waiting for the night’s pleasures.

Spas interplay the justification of ambiance versus integrated muscle and spiritual practicality in the caring of the body if only for the soul.

At the Aventura Resort, sister to the Palace, the flair of The Spa opens up into a structure of relaxation. Despite the size of the resort, the implementation is not as intimate as one might think. With a convention center establishment created to be the envy of corporate retreat heaven with a video conference board room reminiscent of something out of “The Fifth Element”, work and pleasure can integrate hand in hand. Getaway though necessitates intention

The Spa at The Aventura in texture is not as comprehensive in its encompassing experience but is effective in its breakdown especially within its treatment room. The therapy experience mixing interims of holistic massage implemented with pressurized back and calf techniques meant to free the muscles of slight was intense and revelatory. The masseuse responded in term with increased volatility and truly extensive and revelatory poise which made the experience a joy. After a revitalizing blast of hot tea mixed with chlorophyll, a quick dip in the auspice of the hydrotherapy pool focused the intent.

The Grand Velas Spa, by comparison, inters with a sense of the inventive within its spa facility but lacks at times intention of ambience within its treatments. While the atrium over the dipping pool relishes in amenities bathed in dark greens and blue and the dipping pools wash the blankets of stress away, the coldness, despite a modern vision of architecture, seems interrupted and removed despite its beauty. The proximity of its location to the rest of the property also necessitates an imbalance of convenience. In terms of therapy, by comparison, the technique inherent with the deep tissue massage was adequate but not as encompassing as the Aventura.

Specific to mention, even though golf was only experienced its severity, the Iberostar Paraiso Resort (specifically its adults-only section) is a vision of perfection with an intensity of architecture, beauty and sheer luxury that leaves one panting for more. More to come in later adventures.

In the gentle evening of the Playacar at the Italian gourmet restaurant Terrazza, the chandeliers burn brightly as the plucking of a Spanish guitar sings fleetingly in the background. The inset of dinner here, blazed with the interim white satin compelling around the diner, begins with a tangy and vivid octopus carpaccio flying with spice and taste while the crispy auspice of fried misto and calamari added a tendency of zest.

The interplay of a chicken saltimbocca wrapped in luscious cheese with polenta perfectly compliments the viciously stellar parmesan soup that simply dazzles while a taste of filet mignon draped in mushroom sauce melts in the south. The influx of the vivid and dangerous chocolate lasagna dessert with a Marquis de Tabernillas Pinot Noir rounded out the evening with a zest of wondrous determination.

By comparison in vision at the Palace as well, and only open for dinner, Momonohana, brings to fruition a sushi experience in terms of taste that is comparable to outlays in more urban areas. The menu, while limited in intent, makes the most of its flavors creating a great experience despite a rather antiquated dining area looking through the portal of another restaurant.

The journey began, after the inset of endamame and miso, with the vision of the Half Moon Roll combining salmon, flying fish and cucumber followed by a Tokyo Roll which mixed a braised shrimp along with a misago and eel sauce-infused exterior situated around a cream cheese, salmon, cucumber and avocado center that gently satisfied. On the more cooked side, the Satu Chiku Bai invigorated the skewer mentality with hot sauce while the Yakinico topped beer tenderloin strips sizzled with a tangy yakiton sauce.

As a Mariachi band a room over added a touch of culture while the paradox of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” played in simplicity in the background, the continuation of sushi satisfied with the Kyoto, a fried rice roll filled with breaded kanikama, avocado, cream cheese and cucumber so musical in its consumption that two more were ordered.

Another standout was the Tamaki hand roll brimming with spicy tuna and spice that rivals some served in the US. The Cantonese Beef entree following made with angus beef tenderloin and tossed with red peppers, onions, ticana (Mexican red turnips) and a homemade cantonese saucee (specifically made by the chef), both enhanced the meal but didn’t blow out the palette.

In a large meal that ran the gamut, the conclusion offered as much satisfaction as the inset with a Buddha Roll coated with kamikama and filled with cream cheese, avocado and shrimp that set the vision spinning. An effective culinary experience to be sure.

Lunch before the pool at The Cafe gives everything in tandem with an implementation of the comfort versus the filling. The tortillas stuffed with ham and cream cheese volley in hunger’s want while a pasta salad mixing spice, ham, cheeses and spinach fill with intent as lasagna and white cabbage esconsced with cream cheese rock the afternoon.

Late night with room service allows for the twilight recovery while the plasma hums, the jacuzzi purrs and the sounds of waves crashing outside echo through the open balcony. A stacked cheeseburger with surprisingly spicy pickles partnered with fries and a caesar salad replete with chicken and anchovies smooth the lift with room made for a Cuba Libre, expectant in its taste.

Within the Fairmont Mayakoba sprawl, the open air brings multiple levels of intonation as pool stretches out below in a simple progression of tropical essence. With the beginnings of lunch, a Moondaca martini interplays as it mixes the pleasures of Smirnoff, lime, orange juice and blue curacao, a present of lore from the pirates that roamed this area in the 1500s. The influx of the senses jump as a creamy smooth shrimp and mushroom ravioli prepares the day. The main course of pasta mixing ham, pineapple and potato delves into paradox with a pleasant intersect which leads into a closing of kiwi fruit mousse contained in the beauty of pastry cream flour fritters.

Within the sprawl of The Grand Velas Resort, the open serve of Azul predicates the panoramic windows as the guests mill about in the echo of the nearby waves. The different delicacies of fusion perpetrate though the selections of shrimp from a fricasee esconsced in lime triggered with spice to cazalones wrapped in the intensity of tarmagon sauce which heightens its release to jumbo prawns themselves stuffed with bleu cheese envisioned olives.

In the descending light of the evening, the top pool bar back at the Playacar lights up in inevitability. The bartenders are experimental and fun in their confidence beginning with a Peach Fury shot, layered in beauty, mixing schnapps, coconut cream, apple juice, Habana rum and a splash of blue curocao and grenadine to tasteful effect. The US Flag, by comparison, intrepid in its focus, blends itself towards oblivion with Malibu, coconut cream, cucumber, grenadine and blue curacao to a peaceful end.

The texture of food and spa within the Riviera Maya gives the optimum performance of ying and yang. The Aventura Spa heightened with an exceptional massage replete with inventive pressure while the Grand Velas’ beauty reveled in its experience. In terms of food, in addition to the wonderful Los Danzantes experienced on 5th Avenue in Playa, it was Terraza within Playacar Palace that excelled with its satin draped ambiance and zesty food while Momonohana offered fantastic sushi fare to satisfy the cravings of lost worlds.

The Riviera Maya offers all these things and more, only a short jaunt away.

The revolution of Mexico is ingrained in one’s mind but its exploring and luxury spirit is still in force. Despite the swine flu drawback (which has been overwrought on many fronts), Mexico, specifically the Riviera Maya in the Playa Del Carmen area is vibrant and filled with wonderful deals and luxury in addition to just simple, slick and effective getaway fun, away from the spring break party motif of Cancun. Not to say that Cancun isn’t fun but the Riviera is more refined and relaxed in its approach.

Flying into Cancun is simply a hour and a half jump from Houston. Situated an hour south driving, the Riviera Maya is blessed with endless beaches and a plethora of hidden resorts and golf courses, with a variety of different difficulty levels to approximate the novice or experienced player.

Arriving in the night at Playacar Palace, the open air lobby has the underpinings of a fun tropical resort. Sidling into the deluxe suite upstairs, there is a décor of smooth, almost Miami based elegance with silk white and marble finishes. The all-inclusive angle of the resorts translates into a room with a stocked bar of Dos Equis, Heineken and soda in addition to spicket dispensers of Glenlivet, Absolut and Don Quervo. Stepping out onto the balcony where the waves crash beneath, the lights of Cozumel across the bay twinkle in earnest.

Inside as the plasma TV spun, the underlit countertops made the room glow like something out of a Kubrick film as the full size hot tub rumbled with its jets bubbling. With the jacuzzi only steps from the bed, the set up is perfectly suited for getaways, both naughty and nice.

Two key enablers in terms of the resorts and their effectiveness is golf and spas which were specifically focused with each arena providing different challenges and obstacles. Golf first.

The El Manglar, as a starting course, is effective in its essence. Using Par 3s as a standard with a limited amount of water traps allowed for more straight through play. Hole 3 began with a drop shot right from the edge of a trap. An iguana, a common sight in the fields of play here, eyes as a 4 shot to the hole missed a bogie. Hole 4, replete with sand traps, allowed a strong drive with a 9 wood to close on 5 strokes. Hole 6 created a highlight because of nice chip capability which transitions into a lazy slope with an intermediate green. Hole 7, by comparison, had a wind handicap which required a heavy drive against the grain. The green almost allowed a 40 yard sink because the slope runs the way it should and not in counter balance. Hole 10 visualized the transition to the back nine with a clear straightaway shot. Little but aerodynamic birds with red highlights and triangle tails gallop across the green on their two legs looking like little velociraptors stalking their prey.

Hole 12 required some thought because the structure necessitates a volley over two sand traps but the rub is that the progression can be easily overshot. This makes it one of the more difficult holes on the course since there is a hidden water trap behind it which is not apparent even on the map until a ball goes missing. The key on this drive is accurate hits. Hole 15, by comparison, provides for a low and lazy al-lee-oop over the trees which lands directly on the green. Hole 18 ends the structure by allowing a blast-off drive to nowhere before the flag is seen. Angled strategy befits the end of this course.

The Iberostar Playa Paraiso, by comparison, is a wonderful constructed golf course for intermediates but with a state of play that is utterly condusive to groups. The course can be played hard rules but is more apt with a sense of fun which is highlighted by its all-inclusive playability in terms of food and drinks for a price. Heading out, the first element seen was a very engaging and knowledgeable golf pro who recognized this tone. Secondly, the group ahead was made up of young, 30-something bachelors of which one was getting married the following day. The players on the course for the day were not tainted by hard rule egos but more a sense of enjoying the game. The course itself has expanse, having been constructed on the other side of the road across from the actual resort, which is splendid within the adults only area in its own right with an opulence that is both cool and transfixing. The holes in terms of play required jumping simply because of the course’s popularity.

Hole 2 has a driver rock jump which was made undeniably easier by the ultra pristine upkeep of the fairway. Hole 7, a Par 5, was exceptionally challenging due to its 56 foot increase in elevation on an incline to hit the green. Considering the landscaping was built up since the expanse on this part of the coast was originally flatland, the rub is that this is the longest green on the course. On top of this, off Hole 8, there is an underground cave system that used to play host to a winding river. Sequestered away in plain view, on a hidden tree off of Hole 7 as well, there are Mayan markers and a small piece of ruins that has been preserved. After a shot of whiskey overlooking the grounds from the VIP viewpoint used during the Riviera Maya Open, the progression to the back nine began as the history permeates this arena.

Hole 10 required a very cinematic interim with a collapsed tree marking the right wing long sand trap on the straightaway. Hole 13 was blessed by its beautiful landscape and an up-and-over predilection necessitated by competing hill structured obstacles that made getting to the green a rolling quandry.

By far, the most pro level course made for television interaction was the El Chameleon Golf Course at the Fairmont Mayakoba. Ranging with heavy water obstacles from condo bordering rivers to a Par 3 right on the edge of the beach, the course requires specific intensity. Hole 4 begins the progression with a trying water jump which requires a very organized and still shot. Sideswiping the ball too hard on the initial drive ends one up in the brush. Hole 5, by comparison, inflects two counteractive water traps that lull one into a false sense of security on the second shot. Hole 7 is the first of the oceanfront Par 3s which blinds as another iguana squints from aft of the sink spot. Hole 9, by comparison, is a long drive with deliberate intent which adds to the possibility of balls disappearing as if on cue.

Hole 15 is worth the Par 3 simply for the panoramic ocean view while Hole 16 slices with a massive sandtrap that overwhelms if not hit with a slight of hand. Hole 17 offers the last obstacles with distinctive water handicaps but, if trajectory is controlled with finite precision, the playthrough is infinitely satisfying.

Lastly, in the vision of the Playacar Golf Course which is integrated within the Palace Resort, the feeling is one of contentment and comfort as it in many ways is reminiscent of an American public course. The difficulty rests after the Mayan but is lower level than the Chameleon or Iberostar.

The course, in terms of its playability, was run in reverse 18 with Hole 10 being shot first. Hole 11 requires a split shot curved around the bend because of a zig zag in the fairway. The iquanas are plentiful and look with inquisition but it was the wildlife crossing before a putt on the Hole 12 green which was the most peculiar and fascinating. With the body of a pig but furry and the head of a rodent, this animal, called a curtail (which is only found in this part of Central America) paused and looked back with a meek but skittish look before it disappeared into the bushes. This area is fairly residential which makes the inset of this animal all the more interesting.

Heading through Hole 14, there is a long deceiving drive on a downhill slope that offers feedback if hit too hard. Hole 17 offers a Par 3 which is easily overshot if distracted by the ducks who oblongs the fleeting water trap on the left. Hole 18 reverses the mind set with a misdirected a play-through which tricks the player into a right bound shot when the reality is that it curves to the left. At the outset, a tricky alleeoop over a reservoir offers a satisfying conclusion.

Resetting on the front 9, Hole 2 requires a hard hit with an almost lateral shot which can be a bit tricky while Hole 3′s drive is almost like a jump kick. An iquana near the tee-off looks hungry especially when the food cart (inclusive for a fee) drops off a welcome ham sandwich and soda. Continuing with Hole 6, the long Par 5 requires a couple wood hits but sinks the birdie with sensitive ease while Hole 7 wrestles with wind that paradoxically reprimands a counter shot. Hole 9 offers a similar viciousness of spirit as does its brother on 18 with a direct shot that requires an island pop of power onto a green situated between two water traps.

While spa and food require a different article perspective here, the essence of Playa del Carmen which serves as a willing and decisive backdrop for the essence of such a play requires further examination.

Entering into the town at the burning point of twilight, the essence of the bars and shops along 5th Avenue are highlighted by the weekly art progressions envisioned on its streets. Like the vision of Garcia, a visionary seductive artist, based in Rosarito, a similar voice, Nancy Shuazer, who once lived in Austin, lives in loves teasing with bare backs twisted in red satin and mirror gazed reflections within her paintings.

As a Corona is shared through the rhythm of the street, the waft of Lauro’s tobacco tickles the nose with its regal aroma. Lighting a short cigar of Cuban seed freshly rolled the moment before, the thoughts are of bliss as the lighter jumps in flame from the girl’s fingers.

On a quiet street that holds the spark of later heat, Los Danzantes holds the element of dusk. Sitting in the second level above what can become a fiercely energetic open air club, the view upon the street as a red Cadillac filled with long legged bliss lets off its girls as the hostess, beautiful and unseen, watches with angled interest heightens the start. The blinking into night as the mescal bar across the street blazes up its neon reminds one of what Cuba might be today if it had not been struck down within its Communist grasp. There is so much potential in the mixing of genuine culture and a good time that one cannot be missed without the other.

The dinner as the heat within the streets builds is one of new fusion as well as the inclusion of a new chef at Los Danzantes, newly placed from Cozumel from across the bay.

After the kiss of a Lipstick shot mixing white tequila, Smirnoff and grenadine with a fuel shaped after-blast, a grand presentation of “festival capacccio” blended the aspects of conch, octopus and buce offered a wondrous feeling while sauteed tuna with a tart blend of ginger, onions and sauce simply lifted with its grandness.

Next in tandem jumped a shrimp chipotle base ingrained with a viciously tangy black mara sauce (which my dinner companion from Mexico said reminded her of the kind her grandma used to make). As the creations continued in an almost apertif course, a salad brimming with blackberries and cherry tomatoes beautified with the charro-based pulpo charascado which felt like a thousand fig explosions rattling in concession through the taste buds with equal precision.

The visionary masterpiece, as well as culinary, was the essence of a full grilled octopus. It just crisped with intentional viscosity, in a way that few things I have tasted have, as the lime cruise missile fully brings the thick intensity of the flavor into focus. It is truly an item not to be missed.

After that, despite greatness, everything else essentially pales in comparison. The flank steak, grilled with fervor, balanced with the lisping tastiness of plantains sauteed in onions within the love of a Mescal Summer mixing the spirit with Midori, lemonade and Jager excited but seemed anti-climatic.

As a shot of Moonbaca rising Smirnoff, lime and blue curacao quenched the evening, the leveling of the kiwi mousse erupting like a fire to the delight of a watching eye gave satisfaction to the vision of the night.

Golf ruled the day but when the time came for culinary/culture doubleshots, the nights of Playa Del Carmen offered the lights for more to come.

The aspect of being forever accessible is the dream of all on Earth until we begin making our way into outer space which is on the cusp of possibility. On the eve of those important events as well as the Ares X-1 Rocket Test for the Moon, airports continue to thrive.

In Branson, Missouri which continues to build its infrastructure, the new Branson Airport, the first fully private commercial airport in the area, opened to fanfare with both Sun Country and AirTran flying maiden flights with more hopefully to come as Lee Greenwood sang to christen the moment.

The key to the reimergence over the next couple years of this area is the integration of youth. Known for years as a mostly older destination, Branson has the opportunity and potential to develop upwards in this aspect. Most of the performers in the area, save for the top headliners, are younger talent who are testing their wares in the town’s numerous showrooms. Seeing the talent possible makes this almost what would call a summer stock option before the big elements of Vegas and New York but with the possibility of family, safety and affordable living. There is also a diversity of fun to be had although the particulars are still evolving.

The opening of the airport brought Branson’s first Air Show to the runways with the specific highlights being a 300-foot wall of fire raged through on a flyby by the A-10 which was mainly used in Vietnam. Up in the VIP tent on the hill situated above the runway, the expanse and the isolated elements of the arena highlighted aerial acrobatic. Despite a low ceiling, the raging thrust of the Air Force Thunderbirds wowed the audience especially when in formation, another one of the team banked around with afterburners blazing about 1000 feet off the ground right past them.

The connection to the arts is unmistakable. Brad Pitt is a hometown boy from around the area where some of his relatives still live. The genuineness of the people are a direct reflection of that.

The shows performed key into this perception. There is decisive diversity in terms of elements seen. The most interesting and original seen was off the beaten path at the Branson Star Theatre in the engaging and nostalgic “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” which is set in the Catskills in 1960 and features songs written for 70s icon Neil Sedaka and are instantly recognizable. The coolness, which can be updated, is buoyed by the young and vibrant performers reminiscent of a “Cry Baby” mentality. Add to that the aspect that performers from other shows (in their early 20s mostly) come to support their fans making the whole feeling interactive.

The Starlite Theater is another cauldron of diverse quality. The most insistent and stimulating of all was “Liverpool Legends” which is a Beatles Tribute Show which includes an integration of Laura Harrison, George’s sister, who makes herself available for questions. This is a show that Paul McCartney actually came to Branson to see a couple years ago because a lot of their intensity is not mimicry but simple and elegant recreation. Some of the standouts that had the crowd up and cheering were “A Day In The Life” (with resonant psychedelic effects), “Something In The Way” and jump-up-and-down favorite “Twist & Shout” made famous to a new generation with the off-the-hook parade scene in “Ferris Buellar’s Day Off”. In a great antecedent, a British girl in her early 20s with her best girlfriend made her way to Branson specifically to see this show for her 21st birthday dancing like mad in the isles.

The Rankin Brothers whose great show highlight was a spot on rendition of Buddy Holly which was uncanny showed exceptional technical skill especially on guitar while “The World Famous Platters” played to a more subdued crowd that with the romantic interlude of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”.

Heating up after that procession was “50s At The Hop” buoyed by the performance of a lovely brunette named Anna who brought an energy, both soulful and sultry, to the proceedings which really heightened the reality of how cool this music was in that time period when doo-wop was the new hip hop. That is the key: making these performances feel current and not just a paycheck. These younger performers are into it and one can tell. The great thing is that they are learning so they can make mistakes. It shows a genuine love for the art sort of like the enthusiasm you see from college football players before they join the NFL. It is all about the love of the game.

The final show that invigorates the scene is two fold. Seemingly a paradoxical choice, the Acrobats Of China takes on some elements of say “Mystere” formerly at the Mirage in Vegas and strips away the sets. Here it is the sheer will of the students. This more than any other show brings the face of Branson into the 21st Century with aspects of hip hop culture mixing with the actual Western influence on these kids while maintaining their Chinese cultural identity. They are only allowed to come over for nine months at a time to perform and are rotated. The best sequence of the performance was the Butterfly Lovers sequence which has metaphors of “Romeo & Juliet”. The lyrical essence of the shadows against the walls gave the show a great internal quality.

The one really exceptional element that is not really visible in Vegas, NY or LA but that is present in Branson is the outreach to schools and the like. Much like the aspect of performers in the 60s and 70s in Las Vegas, it speaks alot to the community of artists. Here, during the performance of “Acrobats Of China”, a high school band from South Dakota came in as experience working as the opening act to get the feeling of a real audience for a performance. They then stayed for the actual acrobat performance and you could really see the interaction of enthusaism which connected the two.

In terms of a younger hangout element in the area, the list is glaringly short as the infrastructure continues to change and adjusts to the younger crowd which they are trying to reach.

Silver Dollar City is an amusement park of sorts like a Six Flags that was a surprise of riches. One never hears it mentioned in the same breath as Branson unless you are a local but it provides a window to the youth. A couple of the roller coasters stand up to par most specifically “Wildfire” which rages around in inverted rolls and Powder Keg which blasts off like a lit fuse with a shot into the sky. In terms of water rides, the “Flooded Mine” integrates a shooting style game with Disney-style “Pirates” animatronic fun.

The most thrilling ride that made certain teenagers get off was the apt “Giant Swing” which rockets the riders up in the air with force and throttle like a pendulum on speed. And as far as a show, the one that stood out was “The Follies” set in the saloon whose cast brimmed with beauty, youth and energy. Georgia, one of the burlesque can-can girls, was a stand out with her commitment, performance and sheer aura while the comic relief riled the audience with his thinly veiled innuendos. This show is great fodder for adults relying on wordplay while the physical antics kept the kids entertained and unaware. You felt that, despite being in a theme park, it was like you were in one of those old saloons. Classic.

In a quite paradoxical set up, the park sits over a gigantic cave system that is one of the biggest in the country. The tour of this national protected space named “Marvel Cave” incorporates a healthy walk down into the caverns 550 feet below the surface filled with drop offs, rock formations, waterfalls and bats. It again speaks to a diversity of riches in the area.

In terms of places to eat and drink, the selections are limited but growing. However is the small places and hole-in-the-walls that stand out. The central point to start from is Branson Landing right on the edge of Table Rock Lake where the Hilton Promenade rests. A short walk up the hill produces Mr. G’s Italian Restaurant made famous locally because Frankie Avalon (of “Grease” fame for younger audiences) would eat there every night when he was in town performing. The lasanga is hearty and filling and the house salad ensconced in blue cheese hits the spot.

As far as take out, Thai Town which is a little further up the hill offers a healthy interpretation that is not too filling but agrees in terms of flavor and portion. When going to the shows (especially at the Starlite), Amazing Buffet next door is a nice quick affordable jaunt with hot and sour soup, sesame chicken, rice and crab rangoon for a great price. In terms of bars, in the direct area of Starlite, Montana Mike’s offers a nice afternoon hangout drinking Sam Adams Lager draft and nibbling on potato skins (nicknamed “boats”) with sour cream and Monterey Jack cheese. Back at the Landing, the late night until 1am is at Waxy’s O’Shea drinking Beamish near the stool McCartney once sat for a pint when he came to town.

Branson has massive potential. With the opening of their new airport directly in relation to the city, the possibilities become heightened. The city has relevance for youth but more infrastructure needs to be added as the city evolves to draw them. With a diverse amount of entertainment interests that spotlights a youth refining their craft from the play “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” to “Acrobats Of China” to “50s At The Hop”, the talent is there. Silver Dollar City, close by, provides relaxation and thrill. The future is hiding right behind the corner as Branson makes its way into the 21st Century.

The snows create a sense of warmth all their own. The icy wispiness of Quebec City in the heart of winter provides one with a sense of community. The annual Winter Carnival with its mix of bathing suits, ice rafting, sculptures and late nights travails offer a cross-section for those that groove.

The Winter Carnival, which traverses many weekends, creates a blissful wonderland where ice castles are built in blocks and various sculptural perceptions of everything from fish to gas masks are created with love and tenderness. A multi-ethnic swath of people inside a park expanse called the Plains Of Abraham paints the appeal of the gathering across all veins of age. Sneaking through the back corridors, an essential view of the “snow bath” reveals scantily clad and near streakers showing their resilience as they dance and roll around in the snow at freezing temperatures to the sounds of music. Wardrobe malfunctions abound as the general fun continues in full view as wide mouthed spectators below bundled up in layers try to remember what their feet feel like.

“Tornado Twirling” was the next stop of the Carnival. Sashaying through the stairways, the raft boarded at the crest of a tall hill became a spinning cauldron of rubber that was thrust down a large ice slide twisting and spinning its passengers into a fury of screams and delight.

The celebration also boasts a night parade that functions as a cold vision of Mardi Gras combining into a sinister yet classical artistic form “V For Vendetta” with elements of Tim Burton and Edvard Munch. Dancing rabbits surrounded by neon turtles. Spinning large gowns framed by glowing flowers. Lion tamers trapped in their cages acting out their animal instincts. Balloons floating as a jungle of gigantic wooden puppets move in unison. Dancers bathed in pink silk spinning with visions of snow wrapped in their skirts. These visions are pieces of lyrical heaven bathed in the night.

Quebec City allows for a host of different surroundings from food to shopping to nightlife. The Quebec Hilton is central to the festivities with travel up and around the hilly boulevards best accomplished by walking. The city is made up of many one way traverses which makes driving more challenging but avenues of distinction like St. Joseph and St. Jean are easily found to begin the adventure anew.

In terms of cuisine, The Boudoir Lounge, bathed in dark oranges and recessed lighting, provides a cozy perception of dinner offering creamy alfredo seafood pasta with spicy shrimp preceded by a smooth but tangy mushroom soup. The 47th Parallel, around the corner from the parade route, placates the vision with a contemporary and light ambience. An appetizer of soft carpaccio dabbled with a touch of creme gives credence to a tender pork loin flowing between friendly glasses of Cabernet. Last but not least, L’Astral at the Loews Hotel Concorde revolves the dining as a young silken brunette in black plays Coldplay piano standards. Flavorful venison balances a silky consomme wrapped in a pastry bowl as a bite of Quebec blue cheese with a nip of Caribou gives one zip.

Caribou is the local spirit of choice mixing elements of port with an aftertaste much like whiskey. During Winter Carnival, the selling on the street warms the soul as hollow canes carry the elixir for easy consumption. In continuance with spirits, The Largo Club, much like its cousin in Los Angeles, highlights jazz stylings as Carlsberg is consumed and tales of Roger Moore and Shirley Bassey flow like martinis from Gino, the owner. After searching the cold recesses of the streets for late night cocktails, a cab drive, communicated with a series of international hand signals, brings Pub St. Alexandre into focus where folk and 80s music cross paths in a old school wooden style roadhouse. Shots of tequila encourage the peeling of layers as the dancing of an advancing young couple creates a dance floor double stacked in rhythm. An afterwards frothy stout leads way to a shared shot with a raven haired beauty who whispers softly in French as a guitar plays.

Shopping in the briskness of the later afternoon brings on a secluded rendezvous mixing gourmet chocolate and rum-infused maple syrup. At Les Delices d’Erable, the tasting of the Grand Mariner-tinged nectar brings new definition to the idea of “smothering” French toast. C’est Ci Bon, by comparison, offers a variety of confections including the flavors of amaretto, pistachio and expresso wrapped in silky dark cacao while nearby truffles satisfy a female craving with their delicate flavor.

Winter Carnival gives a sense of beauty and elegance to a city hidden in a snowy visage. As the ice drifts on the St. Lawrence River, the beauty of the day gives creed to a classical winter wonderland replete with ice castles, dancing rabbits and bikini snow dancing as the Caribou flows.

Mysticism is ripe in an age of wonder. The more the differences of technology burgeon, the more the aspects of aesthetic are respected and highlighted. Between a perception of what they mean versus how they stand up, the mythic elements of Phoenix and the surrounding area show a diversity of beliefs and cultural ritual while still appealing to the culinary, architectural and luxury bases that beautify the natural presence of the jagged landscape.

The bells ring true into the sunset as the Fort McDowell Resort, run by the Yavapai Nation, sits in the vast expanse of the desert edge. The rustle of the gravel kicks up on the backroads to the Yavapai Experience where the essence of its people comes alive. The imprisonment that enslaved the Yavapai in the past and ushered an exodus from their land speaks to the suffering survived. As one looks out through the cacti receding into the dusk, an elder paints tales of vision quests and sweat lodges to attain enlightenment. Whether it be a former cage fighter recounting his life against expectations or the head of a nation traveling to Washington to further the rights of all, the essence of the land can only be tested against the will of its people.

Heading out into the Superstition Mountains, the stillness gives way to a wash as a road submerged frames an old trail. At the edge of nowhere, the old stagecoach stop of Tortilla Flat beckons its visitors with dollar bills covering all elements as a “cackleberries mexicana” with beans, green chiles and scrambled eggs is consumed in earnest. The winding road on the way back gives way to the Superstition Mountain Museum where Apacheland, an old movie studio where many Westerns were shot with everyone from Kirk Douglas to DeForest Kelly to Clint Eastwood, is reconstructed. Elvis’ chapel from one of the many movies he made there, stands lonely as a dark storm rumbles behind it creating a cinematic vista.

The aesthetic merit accomplished in this area has a bit of paradox balancing between a fusion of glass and nature and an abode of steel and concrete. The inception of the latter, Taliesin West, rests above the desert floor with its own special beacon of light. With its sloped and angled use of symmetrical form and unorthodox techniques, its forward sitting room with absolutely perfect geometry stands only slightly different from the open air design. From the firewall break framing the settling pool to the sunken dark room where students and designer could speak in darkness, the ornate swirling structure of the design and the use of recessed lighting paint the portrait of a mind in motion. The entire place is a test of experimentation in the will of the feasible.

By contrast, the Desert Botanical Garden is ensconced in glass from blue cylinders spiking the land to a large metamorphic star crisscrossed with yellow and orange. As a community of red hats velvet the lines with their smiles as a flash goes off, the art of succulence, which nature perfected in her wisdom, permeates every piece. The blood of this desert oasis is this circle of life, both invigorating and alluring.

The intersection of resort and lifestyle mixes in with the ideals of food and spirits. The two worlds are undeniably connected within this area where art seems to follow the trend. The highlight of the Intercontinental Montelucia Resort & Spa rests in its details such as the ornate antique 15th century doors guarding the main courtyard. The essential European openness of the property reflects into the base of Camelback Mountain, which in the shadow of the afternoon looks like a resting desert creature.

For the wonderfully trendy with a love of deco, Hotel Valley Ho, in comparison, is a retro modern feast for the eyes. From the lobby with its neon highlights like a souped up version of The Avalon in Beverly Hills to the top floor party space that Tommy Lee used for one of his blow-out DJ sets to the pool shaped in the wonderful auspice of a martini glass, this is the place for cool.

The zest continues inside at Cafe ZuZu as a dinner begins with fried clam bathed in citrus aioli along with a lobster shrimp cake kissed by a wisp of thousand island butter. The main course of tender pork tenderloin, roasted with rosemary, is complimented exponentially by a mixture of grits, mushrooms and kale wrapped in an apricot demiglaze.

In contrast to the swirling groove of Valley Ho, the Arizona Biltmore revels in old school glory, counting such luminaries as Dean Martin, the Rockefellers and Spencer Tracy among its former guests. One anecdote speaks of a night in the downstairs lounge where Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. and Liza Minnelli partied late and tickled the ivories into the early morning. The property, constructed by William Wrigley of Chicago Cubs fame, contains his own personal house overlooking the grounds as well as a hand tiled pool that once played host to a sunbathing excursion by the exquisite Marilyn Monroe.

Lunch and the reveling of cocktails into the evening makes the heart pound. The dining reflected the diversity. Barrio Cafe with its lowrider margaritas and sauteed chicken with chunky guacamole twittered the taste buds. Alchemy at The Copperwynd mixed the Southwest dining proper with a tangy spinach alfredo peppered with beans and topped with pulled pork. Talvera by contrast swirled in warm fire at the Four Seasons Scottsdale with a seared filet mignon that melted with flavor while Daseo at the Westin Kierland Resort dazzled with tender shrimp blended in heavenly white sauce with tomatoes and sesame.

The beauty of the night continues with a sampling of the pastry baked concoctions of crab and pork at Eddie’s House with his tart mojitos blending light in various stages of poignancy. The Italian Grotto, with its old school stylings, jazzed up the silken darkness with wines flowing. For the sweetness that was inevitable, La Scala Creamery glistened with the flavor of “Birthday Cake”, resilient in its sugar blessing.

Back at the Intercontinental, the beats continue as M Bar moves in rhythm. Lemon drops give way to the raining of tequila, of which the selection is plentiful. Outside the pools glow as the steady drops of desert water touch the swirling warmth of many faces. Two words come to mind: hot tub.

As the raging jets sooth the soul and clear the vision among the chatter of falling water, the magnificent spectre of Camelback sits in silhouette, inviting new stories.

Legends are built from simple beginnings where life, experience, focus and survival meet in extraordinary circumstances. It can be the experimental thinking of Frank Lloyd Wright or the changing faces of loss, compassion and identity at the Heard Museum. Whether one is an explorer of lore, partying in the blaze of a club or changing the face of a nation, one truth remains: push the envelope.

Phoenix and its surrounding area in this vein offer a bevy of choices where the pressure is low, the chill factor is high and the beauty of art and luxury blend in an exciting expression of infinite possibilities.

The textures and sub-tropical essence of the jungles fade into the distance as the temples rise into infinity and the imagination takes hold in the vision of Thailand, complete in its trinity of flavor. From the hidden province that is Isan in the northeast to the wonder of the elephant rainforests south of Phuket to the magic that is Samui, an island hidden off the peninsulan coast, this country paints of picture of diversity and adventure.

Gliding in the evergreen comfort of Premium Laurel on Eva Air connecting from Los Angeles to Bangkok through Taipei, the expanse of the capital city spreads out below, the 17-hour journey spoiling in its whirl of exceptional lounges, signatures cocktails (such as plum liqueur) and attentive flight attendants. Inside the urban sprawl, the Four Seasons Bangkok provides an oasis from which to launch our trek. After a relaxing siesta at the pool, a refreshment of champagne, prosciutto and delicious spinach and cheese pizza at Biscotti lead to our main course at the Madison Room with a sizzling rib-eye which ushers us into dreamland.

After a filling breakfast of Kao Tom mixing boiled rice, pork and egg, the ornate spires and carvings at The Grand Palace stretch out inside the intricately carved visages as soldiers stand guard, statues in the midst of the piety of the Emerald Buddha. Walking to a dock along the Chao Phraya River, a longtail boat coasts across the busy channel as a sea craft filled with faith chanting followers leads us through a lock into the back canals of Bangkok. Arriving at the hidden abode of Amita’s, a Thai cooking lesson commences teaching the spicy and filling crest of a savory creamy chicken curry over rice and a luscious papaya salad pinnacled with coconut milk and bananas.

Our carriage of air conditioned caravan bliss heads away from the bustle towards Pak Chong in the vicinity of Nakon Ratchasima. Chok Chai Farm swirls in the sustainable agro element where ice cream tickles the tongue and Thai Cowboys wrangle. After a soothing in-room Thai Massage at Khao Yai Fah Sai Resort at the base of a reaching mountain, the Thai Western of lore reveals itself at the outdoor Thong Somboon Club. Pork and local Singha drafts lead to cowgirls celebrating as dancing on the line with buckle holding enthusiasm greets the cheers of the night.

The Dan Kwian Village sprawls out as dogs and toads bask in their freedom while, within the workshops, the artisan of clay sculpting unfolds in real time. Walking through the different styles and streets, the etched brilliance makes itself known as small constructed treasures appear before the eyes, priceless in their nature.

Walking through the streets of Korat in the approaching dusk, the stores of gold shine. After miso, sushi and cream of the curry give credence at the Dusit Princess Hotel, the night market within walking distance beckons. There the local flavor permeates as the delicacies of grub, cricket and frog, marinated, grilled and simmering with spice, greet the palette with expectant and unknown anticipation highlighted by a touch of mint. Late night continues as the Coyote Bar rages with a Thai rock band fronted by an excellent guitarist shredding the fantastic as bottled Singha pours and cracked necks increase the resolve with the rhythm of dancing. The race back in pedi-cabs provides exceptional thrill as the speed throttles.

Phimai Temple rises in the pink hues of sunset as the full moon crests over the ruins of this thousand year old site. Standing on the stone, looking up at the ancient spires, the dances begin and food stretches into the night as the tales swirl with sticky rice.

After enjoying the local cuisine replete with chicken, sliced corn, mushrooms and asparagus, the cool and brisk bus of lore arrives at Suvarnabhumi Airport signaling the journey to the South aboard Bangkok Airways. Landing in the darkness of Phuket, the Royal Marina bursts with activity as local culinary treats highlighted by filling sushi mixed with pulsating music promote the dancing of Travolta heating up the light. The Sarojin Resort beckoned us with a spirited ride to Khao Lak an hour away on the Gulf Of Siam. The Lady Sarojin Suite, beautified in its reception and expansive silken organic essence, welcomes with open arms. After a luscious dinner with a spicy curry touch, paper lanterns, a tradition here in the South, were lit and offered to the sky, visible and viable to extreme heights. Offshore at 2am, thunder rumbled in the Andaman Sea as the moon glowed the water.

After a soothing morning stretch on the white beach as trawlers swayed, the transfer to Elephant Hills set the adventure forth. The majesty of Surat Thani, encompassed in the Khao Sok National Park, is a wonder. After checking into our luxury tents, open air and enraptured with the sounds of the surrounding jungle, we venture to the elephant base camp via wind blown transport. The elephants stroll into view with their Mahout handlers on top of their backs. These intelligent creatures line up as we begin chopping their supper of pumpkin, cucumber, corn and pineapple via machete before picking one to feed. Hop Ma, the one I chose, ate with fervor, his trunk grasping the food peppered with sugar cane as pats encouraged goodwill. After climbing aboard bareback with his Mahout Ta Da and riding to the back of the compound, washing commenced with your humble narrator scrubbing this wonderfully gentle animal behind the ears as well as on the back and snout with coconut and soap before rinsing her off in the glimpse of the melting essence of the spire-like mountains.

A longtail boat heads out onto the mythic lake of Cheow Lan as the limestone mountain cliffs rise up straight from the water like gigantic scepters disappearing into the distance. After a lunch of grilled fish aboard a floating raft platform, elephant trekking back at the Hills commenced aboard Poke, the happy elephant, who loved going off on his own to the chagrin of his Mahout while pulling down branches as fellow riders in mounted seats cheered in support. This experience is not to be missed.

Canoeing down the Sok River at the cusp of the tent camp continued the fervor before the bus boarded for the Samui Ferry. Located off the Eastern coast of the Thai Peninsula, the paradise of Samui welcomes with the colors of the mist. The Four Seasons Koh Samui is a miracle in earthly form, its property stretching like Eden from its pinnacle point. The villa, replete with long private pool, vaulted bedroom, private deck and soaking tub, is the height of luxury and worth the trip alone. After a dinner mixing rich Thai salads and prawns that delighted the soul along with a welcome and paradoxical spinach ravioli, the late night welcomed the neon at Chaweng Beach where the music pounded in unison from the open air cocktails of C to My Friend to Me Me as a Havana cigar is lit and the Singha, cold and torrent, paints the boulevard.

After touring the island and changing the visage to truly local via rock stone formations and the overture of the Buddha, the return to the Four Seasons welcomes The Spa, almost treehouse like in its layout, with private villas for soothing of the chi. The 90-minute Siam Fusion, smooth with both medium and gentle pressure, provide a relief of unrelenting bliss. A late afternoon cocktail class highlighted the signature of the creamy coconut Kalalae as an early evening beach soiree kissed the sky while a full moon, burning, crested above the islands.

After an early morning 18 holes at Santiburi, barely 15 minutes away, where the back nine stretches out with angelic views of the ocean and angling increases for strategic play especially on Hole 11 & 17, the rain gently cleanses the land with love and care. Such is the truth of Thailand where diversity reigns supreme. As the plane lifts off from Samui and the blue green heaven sifts below the clouds, the greatness of this experience holds true as the trumpeting of an elephant echoes away.

The long road out of New York City offers many paths. For the weekend and business traveler finding new adventures encourages exploration, even in the most obvious places. Venturing out from the borough of Manhattan via Penn Station and Amtrak with NJ Transit, the breath of experience sequestered away on the shores of New Jersey, both soothing and tantalizing, reaches out its arms.

Barely an hour and a half on the train with one quick stop, Spring Lake is a sleepy town on the edge of never. On the brisk of night, the howl of the train passing by provides solace; the stars in the sky bright without vast cover of light. The White Lilac Inn provides a quaint and cozy retreat with a soothing quality that tempts the angel. The Vermont Room, in particular, an intimate little loft, is peppered with fishing references and warmth. Walking through the night as ducks quietly voice their solidarity, Harrigans (harriganspub.com) glows in the distance. Spring Lake, in terms of pure portrayal, is Irish at its core. Inside this pub, the Guinness runs smooth as the late crowd pours in for a last pint. The hot pop of the sizzling sliced steak special melts in the mouth along with a sour cream and butter topped baked potato, The savory fried mushrooms are a godsend as the stomach fills with glee.

Riding a bike into the downtown area of the small village, the quietness and beauty of this gem located within the heart of the Jersey Shore speaks to the locals’ intent to keep it pristine. The clacking of the boards on the boardwalk give way to wispy clouds floating offshore as the rippling Atlantic bids adieu. Inside The Breakers Hotel, a Kettle One Soda must pause as a regional priests’ convention celebrates happy hour and the twilight slips to dusk.

The encompassing service and texture of the Victoria House welcomes one with generosity. Chocolate chip cookies, sweet to the core, await in the dining room. Upstairs inside the Manor Suite, the design is both masculine and sensitive with a magnificent essence of relaxation. The reds and whites of the bathroom replete with jacuzzi tub speak wonders as a gentle port glistens within crystal. Two doors down within another wonderfully maintained 19th Century house lies Whispers, an old school restaurant of pure heart. The presentation of sauteed shrimp, fixed like skyscrapers against pita crisps and a black bean cake, lays the groundwork with a tangy arugula salad mixed with tasty blue cheese and crunchy candied pecans, which distinctly enhance the taste. A smooth and luscious Chilean sea bass marinated in sake for extra kick predicates an after dinner cheese plate which soothes the stomach highlighted by a rapturous valencay imported from France, coupled with the element of a South African wine entitled Goats Do Roam.

But the paradox lies only in the eyes of the beholder. A white stretch Caesars limo awaits outside the Victoria House in stark contrast to its surroundings. Bidding fond farewell as the cell charges up, the Garden State retreats into woods before the shiny pillars against the ocean reveal themselves in the guise of Atlantic City. The paradox also revels in the effect that Spring Lake stood in for a young Atlantic City in the 1982 film “Ragtime”. Checking into The Tropicana, the element of the East Coast casino rings in. The smoking ban is still in effect so the sea air still permeates the senses. Walking through the Trop’s newly minted Quarter, which opened a little more than three years ago, there is a sense of Vegas perception. In a suite overlooking the Atlantic as dolphins congregate and swim a couple hundred yards offshore, the irony of the setting amazes in certain circles simply because, from the West Coast, one is used to desert. Heading downstairs, the burnt orange hue inside Cuba Libre is intoxicating made even more so by the service of Jenna deep in the recesses as the music flares with Latin and rhythmic vibes. The “12 Tastes of Cuba” menu fills with pleasure and tests the palette with something slightly forbidden. Beginning with a proper Peach mojito, the starter course melts with pressed Cuban bread ensconced with mango butter. The empaneda, spicy in its texture with chicken, corn and jack cheese, swirls the love as a Guava BBQ rib gently slides off the bone. The main course begins with churrasco, a grilled skirt steak sauteed in lemon sauce, while the amerones con cana, a sugar cane skewered jumbo shrimp, dazzles. Not to be undone by sides of grilled tart plantains and tangy black beaks and rice, the deserts assail the taste buds with a combination of sweet vanilla flan and a chocolate tort, sinful to the core with golden pineapple strips and a smooth coconut pudding.

As the late night permeated action, The Comedy Stop provided a bit of levity with New York humor peppering a touch of blue for the lighthearted as a Corona is consumed. As the darkening hour approaches, Ri Ra offers a pint of Smithwicks as the guitar enhanced fervor of U2′s “One” is chanted throughout the hall.

The bright vision of the breaking surf the following morning offers generosity in the hidden pleasure of the Blue Mercury Spa, hidden within The Quarter. After a steam enriching breath, the hot rocks massage harnesses the elimination of stress built up from hard driving. Later, touring in a car, the expansion of the city by the sea becomes apparent. Jimmy Buffett is in the process of acquiring Trump Marina and turning it into his own casino which, because of its ready access to boats, is a perfect set up. Over near The Borgata, a City Center, like the current massive project in Las Vegas, is preparing to break ground pending an economic upshift. Along with a newly planned connecting train service from New York City, the possibilities are building.

Settling in for lunch at The Continental in The Pier Shops At Caesar’s Palace, the lobster-infused macaroni and cheese along with a side of buffalo tendered meatballs savors the soul as the waves crash in full view of the cresting sun. Later, walking down Atlantic Boulevard under the shadow of night, the Knife & Fork Inn calls to its abode. Standing strong for nearly 100 years, its coziness is matched only by the hearty, benevolent nature of its food and personable service. Beginning with the dreamy element of tuna tartare raptured with waffle crisps and a tomato concasse, a Key Lime martini, both vicious and soothing, along with a corn and crab chowder wisped in jalapeno cream, makes way for a flaky and brilliant 24 oz. rib-eye flanked with undeniable fervor by heavenly goat cheese gratin potatoes and silken spinach topped with true shaved parmesan cheese. After a delectable chocolate threesome of desert, a quiet walk on the boardwalk, wrapped in chill, reveals the old school visage of The Irish Pub, hidden in the back alleys, where the locals come to drown their wares: Guinness, smiling waitresses and all.

The soaring Water Tower at Harrah’s, the tallest building in Atlantic City, provides an encompassing view of a city in transition while The Chelsea Hotel, in paradox, situated off Pacific Boulevard, envelopes its guests in old world Hollywood flavor worthy of the chill jet setter or the incumbent rock star. Both provide a perception of the new Atlantic City, more cosmopolitan in nature, where life shifts in structure to those who know how to live it.

After enjoying tangy shrimp over orce along with steamed mussels, juicy and visceral, at Harrah’s newly opened McCormicks & Schmicks, the early morning pacification of a signature massage at the Red Door Spa provided clarity, both spiritual and physical with which to embrace the day.

Atlantic City, like Spring Lake, is a city embracing its history but also foraging forward. The beauty is that for the traveler on business or on-the-go, these two options are easily accomplished as day trips from the comfort of the Big Apple and provide a vision of Jersey life possible, waiting to be set free.
